The World Health Organization’s (WHO) European office has expressed concern over a decline in condom use among sexually active teenagers worldwide, Kwedu News has learnt

According to a recent report by WHO, the percentage of teens using condoms during their last sexual encounter has dropped significantly since 2014.

The report, which surveyed nearly 250,000 15-year-olds across 42 countries, found that only 61% of boys and 57% of girls reported using condoms in 2022, down from 70% and 63% respectively in 2014.

WHO Europe Regional Director Dr. Hans Kluge described the findings as ‘dismaying’ but ‘not surprising,’ given the lack of comprehensive sexuality education in many countries.

The report highlights the need for improved education and access to contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

The survey also revealed disparities in condom use among teens from different socioeconomic backgrounds, with those from poorer families being more likely to forgo condoms.

WHO is urging policymakers to take action to address these trends and ensure that young people have access to accurate information and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
