Gutu, Zimbabwe – Two police officers stationed at ZRP Basera have been arrested and charged with theft, alongside four other individuals, after stealing 8 500kgs of drought relief maize on the 13th of July 2024.

The arrest of the two, who are sworn to uphold the law, follows another shocking incident where three Beitbrige stationed officers raped and threatened to kill a teenager who had visited a relative at Chitulipasi Post Camp Quarters.

Allegations are that the two officers, Admond Mavhangira (45) and Allen Hamandishe (32), along with the other four, Calvin Munhamo (38), Daniel Charungwa (45), Costa Fire (29) and one Shepherd Masundidzire (49) employed by Madzingo Transpoters as a driver, connived and stole 170 bags of drought relief maize.

Police reports that on June 13, 2024, Hamandishe was tasked with escorting a truck carrying 370 bags of maize to the police camp for safekeeping.

He and his accomplices however hatched a plan to steal part of the grain consignment, valued at USD $3 646.

The accused officers, along with their co-conspirators, allegedly offloaded the 170 bags of maize at Chimombe Clinic, betraying the public’s trust and their oath to uphold the law.

The theft was discovered during distribution of the relief maize, investigations leading to the subsequent arrest of all the accused.

The six were denied bail and are expected back in court on the 1st of August 2024.
