A-53-year-old woman from Ringwood North has died, while two others are hospitalised, from a Clunes town retreat, about 30km from Ballarat, after consuming a beverage suspected to have contained mushrooms.

The tragic incident has attracted an investigation by Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit detectives

Victoria Police believe the woman drank the beverage around 12 noon on Saturday and became ill after, along with the other two.

Victoria Police say the investigation is open and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The incident led to the cancellation of a planned event described as “sound healing” the following day, Sunday.

A day before, Friday night, the retreat is said hosted an event with a spirit medium where guests were given a chance to ask questions.

World Australia reports that the town has faced a series of tragic events in 2024.

“Since February, three local women, Samantha Murphy, Rebecca Young and Hannah McGuire died allegedly at the hands of men.

“Miner Kurt Hourigan died in a mine collapse in March and the area experienced bushfires over summer.”
