Chirumhanzu Nursing school gutted by fire, Health Ministry pledges assistance

A nursing school in Chirumanzu District in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe was recently rased by a fire destroying buildings and property worth thousands of dollars, this publication can reveal.

The fire incident occured on Sunday last week (11 February 2024) at St. Theresa Nursing School of Excellence in the early morning hours.

The cause of the fire, which is said started in the visitors reception, is yet to he determined.

Recently appointed Health and Child Care Deputy Minister, Honourable Sleiman Kwidinibwho is also Chiwundira Member of Parliament (MP), accompanied by the local MP, Chirumanzu South Constituency’s Honourable Barbra Rwodzi also the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, recently visited the school to assess the extent of the damage.

Part of the school’s administration block, library, male hostels, students dining room and kitchen were among some of the gutted areas.

Burnt items include furniture, beds, clothes, laptops, stoves, kitchen utensils, refrigerators, solar panels, roofing, library books among others.

The nursing school currently houses 165 students which include 35 male students and 130 females.

Speaking during the tour, Deputy Minister Kwidini said his Ministry will help in mobilising resources for the reconstruction of the damaged building and building of new blocks at the facility.

Meanwhile, a school that had its roof blown off during heavy rains last season in the same district has been successfully re-roofed.

Nyagari Primary School, situated in the Chirumanzu Zibangwe constituency has been successfully roofed after receiving a donation of roofing sheets from the local MP, Jacob Chokururama.
