Grandmother murdered over witchcraft accusations

A 94 year-old woman was beaten to death by her grandson who accused her of witchcraft at village Marozva under Chief Banga in Shurugwi ,the incident occurred on 3 February 2024 at around 2000 hours.
It is the state’s case that on 3 February 2024 Esther Marozva was at her homestead together with her son Chamunorwa Mugariri (50) and daughter in-law Soneni Mpofu (36) when her grandson Takudzwa Mugariri (25) arrived home .
It is alleged that Takudzwa started accusing his grandmother of witchcraft.
It was reported that Takudzwa went on to take Marozva’s clothes and burnt them ,Chamunorwa and Mpofu tried to refrain Takudzwa but it was in vain.
It is said that Chamunorwa rushed to his elder sister Dorcas Mugariri’s residence at village Mujau under Chief Banga in Shurugwi to inform her and during his absence Mpofu was also chased away from home by Takudzwa who was now beating the elderly Marozva .
It alleged that when Chamunorwa returned ,he found Marozva’s lifeless body leaning against a 50kg sack of maize in her bedroom whilst Takudzwa was seated on the bed and Takudzwa then ran away.
Zimbabwe Republic Police attended the scene and they observed that Marozva’s body had multiple injuries and the body was conveyed to Shurugwi district Hospital.
Zimbwabwe republic police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said they are appealing to members of the public who might have information that can lead to the arrest of Takudzwa to approach any nearest police station.
ZRP also urges relatives to resolve disputes peacefully and to respect the sanctity of life.
