The Zimbabwe Government has raised the age of consent from 16 to 18 years effective 12 January 2024.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa through Statutory Instrument 2 of 2024..In terms of the Presidential Powers( Temporary Measures) ( Protection of Children and young persons) made the announcement.
Under the new laws having sexual intercourse with a boy or girl under 18 years is now a criminal offence.
Meanwhile the new law has drawn mixed feelings and reactions with some citizens saying the law is at variance with the trends in many countries internationally where the consent age is 16.
