The National AIDS Council (NAC) has revealed that Matabeleland North’s Umguza District has recorded one of the highest new HIV infections in the province, and country at large, due to mining activities and hash economic conditions faced by young girls who are lefy vulnerable.

NAC said the District recorded an HIV prevalence which almost tallies with that of the nation.

NAC Umguza District AIDS Coordinator, Mongiwabesuthu Ngwenya, as quoted by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) during a media tour of the area recently, said illegal mining was one of the major causes of the high HIV prevalence in the District.

“(This is) Due to the illegal mining activities in the district and the economic challenges the communities face and most of the girls are heads of families,” he said, adding that NAC is not sitting back.

“The National AIDS Council is employing various interventions such as sister to sister programme seeing that adolescent girls are the ones that fall prey to these vices and are vulnerable given their circumstances.

“There is also another model brother-to-brother programme which targets their male counterparts albeit a lower percentage of boys are affected.”

This comes as Zimbabwe will join the world on the 1st of December 2023 to commemorate World AIDS Day, as well as hosting the International Conference on AIDS & STIs in Africa set for Harare from the 4th of December to the 9th.

was revealed at a media tour that was organized by National AIDS Council to give the media an appreciation of HIV and AIDS interventions in the communities.
