Veteran journalists mentor young female journalists to survive the newsroom

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) Journalism Womentorship fellowship programme hosted its second fellowship in Bulawayo with over 40 participants drawn from all corners of the country.
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation Journalism Womentorship fellowship programme has two events each year, the fellowship has been in existence for the past three years and this is the fourth year it is being held for young female journalists in Zimbabwe.
The fellowship targets mainly on grooming upcoming and new female journalists in media industry.
The Womentorship programme is designed to assist female journalists to learn how to survive the newsroom and navigate it through guidance and mentorship by veteran senior female journalists.
During this womentorship journalism fellowship in Bulawayo, The Sunday Mail Editor Victoria Ruzvidzo who was one of mentors said that she has been in the newsroom for over 30 years and she feels like the young ones do not have to refurbishment the wheel and they do not have to go through the challenges that they went through in the newsroom for the past years as they are still in their primary years of working.
Ruzvidzo also encourage female journalist to work hard and fight to survive in the newsroom by doing the extra ordinary.
“As young female journalist I encourage you to claim your own share of the cake , by working hard and do the extra ordinary ,choose hard beats and go an extra mile ,” said Ruzvidzo
Faith Zaba who is also the editor of the Zimbabwe Independent and was one of the panelist during this programme encourages young female journalist to be bold enough to break the barriers that are hindering them from making it the media fraternity.
Zaba also encourage young female journalist to protect themselves and to observe media laws and ethics especially when reporting on politics, she said they must be always at the right side of the law to avoid misinforming the people with wrong information and to avoid being arrested .
Martha Mamombe a broadcast journalist at ZiFM Stereo and was one of the panelist during this womentorship fellowship, also encourages young female journalist to be multitasked with all media skills so as to make it in the media industry
“You can go beyond one profession and have a broader understanding of the media industry so as to make it in your carrier,”said Mamombe
