Mbira music an African channel of communication

Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social behavior, norms, values and taboos found in a particular society, it varies from one society to another in their diversity of cultures across societies.

Human through socialization, which is shown by the diversity of culture can be expressed through behavior, dressing, art, music, food, tradition, festivals and other social events.
Mhakwe Heritage Foundation Trust Executive Director and founder David Mutambirwa said the significance of mbira in the cultural context is to acknowledge and ignite the spiritual realm to manifest and share with the living.

Mutambirwa further said that Mbira remains a significant tool to acknowledge our ancestors to communicate with today’s living.
“We can’t be who we are without our past, we recognize our ancestors with the tools which they used such as mbira, drums, spears knives among other regalia,”said Mutambirwa

Mirriam Lishoma well known as Madhuve further said that Mbira instrument is the most spiritual music item we have as Zimbabweans and some parts of Africa it is our connection with the afterlife and mbira music plays a big role in our lives both spiritually and socially especially when communicating with the ancestors.
Caution Shonhai mbira artist who told this publication that he was motivated by his great ancestor to become an mbira artist through dreams said in our African culture mbira is the messenger that carries messages to and from our ancestors and the creator..
Mutambirwa further said that today’s society has been decimated, adulterated by exogenous influences among them globalization, the so-called civilization in the form of colonialism and Christianity among other’s and as Zimbabweans we must remain who we are and not what others want to be.
Madhuve said that as Madhuve legacy brand they are doing a lot in upholding cultural heritages that includes mbira music by way of doing social campaigns via different social media platforms and mainstream media educating people about culture through Mbira music.
