People with Albinism shouldn’t be Discriminated

Albinism in a condition that is misunderstood by most people because people lack education on what albinism is . Most people with albinism are discriminated against. Albinism is stereotyped hence people with albinism face different challenges.

Albinism is a genetic condition that decreases the production of melanin, resulting in a fair skin complexion, light eyes and hair, and increased susceptibility to various skin and eye conditions.
In an interview with this publication, Zimbabwe Albino Association, Project Officer Kudakwashe Muchahi said that people with albinism face biological ,social, economic and psychological challenges.

‘People with albinism face biological challenges. Their skin is sensitive to the sun and it is prone to cancer. Because of this they need sunscreen lotion for their skin. They also have sight problems which requires them to wear prescribed glasses,’
‘People with albinism also face social and economic challenges. They face stigmatization and discrimination since people comment about their appearence. This also leads to economic challenges as they struggle to get employment. They also face psychological challenges for example they tend to withdraw from others and other challenges include low self esteem and low self confidence,’ he said.
Muchachi also said that there is need for awareness campaigns to educate people about albinism so that they know what it is .
‘There is need for awareness campaigns so that people are educated about albinism so that they know what it is . People with albinism should not be discriminated. They also deserve same opportunities as others. They also need sunscreen lotion as well as vision glasses ,’ he said.
He also added that Zimbabwe Albino Association has plans for this year to educate communities about albinism.
‘ This year the organisation has plans to educate communities about albinism. Community leaders as well as communities will be educated on albinism.

Traditional leaders will also be educated so that they educate others about albinism. People with albinism should be included in every sector. They also deserve equal opportunities hence they should not the discriminated.
Meanwhile, Muchahi also said that this year they are going to commemorate the Albinism Day on 13 June .
