Six people died while 7 others are seriously injured and admitted at Kwekwe and Gweru General Hospitals after a head-on collision between a Honda Fit and a Nissan NP300 truck along Kwekwe-Gokwe highways on Sunday evening (21/05/23).

The Honda Fit was carrying eight people and the driver headed towards Gokwe while the Nissan truck was headed towards Kwekwe with three passengers and the driver on board.

After the collision, which happened around 6pm, four people died on the spot, including the two drivers, while two others died on admission at Kwekwe General Hospital.

National Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the horror crash but did not give details that led to the accident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which six (6) people were killed whilst seven (7) others were injured at the 15 kilometre peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe road on 21st May 2023 at about 1800 hours.

“A Nissan NP300 with three (03) passengers on board, which was travelling towards Kwekwe, was involved in a head-on-collision with a Honda Fit vehicle with eight (08) passengers on board, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

“As a result of the accident, both drivers and two (02) passengers died on the spot whilst two (02) other passengers died on admission at Kwekwe General Hospital,” Asst. Com. Nyathi said.

Three of the crash victims’s names have been identified as Edward Mutimbu (40) of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, Headquarters, Tafadzwa Chokera (man aged 24) of Zhombe Business Centre and Anna Muzeziwa (42) of Zhombe Mission Hospital.

Asst. Com. Nyathi said the other three victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin hence the names could not be released.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst five of the injured victims are admitted at the same hospital.

The other two are admitted at Gweru General Hospital.

Asst. Com. Nyathi pleaded with motorists to always be patient on the roads and adhere to all road rules and regulations.
